Mayflower Water Treatment Works of South West Water UK

The construction of the new £60 million state-of-the-art Water Treatment Works for Plymouth, started in April 2016, after an 18-month pilot study. It went into service in the spring of 2020 and uses cutting-edge treatment processes, designed and developed by PWNT and tested at a pilot facility from June 2013 until June 2015. The new waterworks includes SIX® (suspended ion exchange with resin regeneration system), ILCA® (inline coagulation and adsorption) and CeraMac® (ceramic membrane microfiltration). It is the first time that this combined technology has been used in the UK.

The high-tech plant provides the following advantages :

  • Less materials needed in construction due to a compact footprint, meaning less construction costs;
  • Less cost to maintain, with fewer staff needed for operations;
  • Less chemicals needed than traditional water treatment processes;
  • Low life-cycle costs, as it uses ceramic microfiltration membranes to remove harmful pathogens that have a proven lifespan of more than 20 years and are non-toxic to the environment;
  • High and consistent water quality as the ion exchange process is able to remove pesticides, colour and taste

The above mean reduced bills for customers whilst delivering high quality drinking water consistently with reduced environmental impact.

The plant was opened officially on 4 November 2020.
